Academic achievements:
Katarina Batur was born in Zadar on October 16, 1991. After graduating from Franjo Petrić High School, she enrolled in the undergraduate study in archeology at the University of Zadar. In 2013, she continued her studies at the graduate level, focusing on the subjects of nautical and maritime archeology.
During her first year of undergraduate studies, she takes diving courses and participates in exploration of underwater sites under the guidance of Irena Radić Rossi, which influenced the orientation of scientific interests towards maritime heritage, the study of ship cargoes and structures.
In March 2015, she was awarded the Rector's Award of the University of Zadar for achievements, and the Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship in Underwater Archeology američke asocijacije Women Divers Hall of Fame. She used the award for advanced training at Richard Steffy's Ship Reconstruction Laboratory, where she learned how to draw ship lines, reconstruct ships from archeological sites, and apply photogrammetry and 3D visualization to document ships. Upon her return from the USA, she enrolled in the postgraduate study of Archeology of the Eastern Adriatic at the University of Zadar, and in April 2016 became a team member of the AdriaS project - Archeology of Adriatic Shipbuilding and Seafaring, funded by CSF. In addition to studying ship structures, research into the new-age Venetian shipwreck near Gnalić encourages her to study the production, trade and maritime transportation of raw materials for paint production.
Since October 2016, she has been employed as assistant in the Department of Archeology, within the CSF Development of careers of young researchers – education of new PhD fellows. For the purpose of her doctoral research, she has been characterizing raw materials for paint production from the shipwreck of Gnalić at the Interdisciplinary Center for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in Marseilles. Since 2019. she cooperates with the laboratory Ateliergebow in Amsterdam, the umbrella institution of the Dutch Ministry of Culture, Rijksmuseum and the University of Amsterdam. The deadline for defending a doctoral thesis is September or October 2020.
